Diamond Finds At State Park

Crater of Diamonds State Park allows visitors to not only learn about the history of diamonds, but also dig for them.

Last week a visiter found something big.  He uncovered a 3.86-carat stone being called the “Heart of Arkansas.” It’s the largest anyone has dug up since April 2010 when a visitor discovered an almost five-carat brown diamond.

Another couple found a diamond recently, as well.  Melissa and Kenny Oliver of Rosston found a flawless, 2.44-carat white diamond at the park. Because it was found during the “supermoon” event, the couple named their diamond the Silver Moon.

According to Park Interpreter Margi Jenks, “The Oliver’s white diamond is triangular-shape and has a frosted appearance, like an ice cube. It’s a very beautiful gem.”

Since the beginning of 2011, park visitors have dug up 129 diamonds, 10 of which weighed over 1 carat each.
