What Is Sweetest Day?

Happy Sweetest Day everyone! 

Falling on the third Saturday of October, it’s similar to Valentine’s Day in that it is an opportunity to show the ones in your life how much you like them.  However, it isn’t exclusive to those in romantic relationships. Sweetest Day is to show appreciation to friends, relatives and associates.

The yummy name isn’t a coincidence. It actually comes from its origin.

Sweetest Day is most frequently attributed to candy company employee Herbert Birch Kingston though some think several of Cleveland, Ohio’s top candy makers dreamed it up as promotion 88 years ago. The Cleveland Plain Dealer’s October 8, 1921 edition, which chronicles the first Sweetest Day in the city, states that 12 confectioners came up with the idea and  distributed over 20,000 boxes of candy to “newsboys, orphans, old folks, and the poor.”

Candy isn’t the only gift given though. Jewelry, as every woman knows, goes well with chocolates.
